Host Committee Events

The Host Committee has prepared a schedule of participatory events that will draw you to this small city with a big heart and a long history. Boston has many attractions, and we will provide a short list for you to consider. There are dozens of other things for you to choose from and many are within walking distance or a brief ride. Three different subway lines (“the T”) are a few blocks from the Park Plaza Hotel and you will not need a nickel to get off, as Charlie did.

Arriving Tuesday, May 7

Attend international day or new member orientation. Check into the hotel and at the NAA conference registration desk. There you will have the opportunity to sign up to go out for dinner across the street at the original Maggiano’s Little Italy, family-style, with friends you have not yet met. https://www.maggianos.com/locations/Massachusetts/Boston/4-columbus-ave .

At 6 PM join us at the President's Welcoming Reception. This will feature a display “where we came from, where we are going” about the NAA’s past and continuing efforts to mentor new arbitrators through salons.

Wednesday, May 8

7:30 AM – Continental breakfast available for all. Speaking of salons, salon participants past and present will be encouraged to arrive promptly, gather their breakfast, and sit together at designated tables in the plenary room. We hope that our emerging arbitrators will make lasting friendships at the NAA.

5:30 PM – Time for the traditional New Members Reception. Rumor has it that some folks will have reviews from a Southie Pub Crawl to share. At the Reception we are featuring a very special treat. You will be asked to take your seats for a show by Boston’s very own Jimmy Tingle.

Jimmy Tingle is a lifelong Cambridge resident and attended Cambridge Public Schools, UMASS Dartmouth and The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard where he was the 2010 graduate school commencement speaker.

          • He has worked as a humorist and commentator for 60 Minutes II and MSNBC and has appeared on The Tonight Show, CNN, Conan O'Brien, Fresh Air with Terry Gross and in his own HBO half-hour comedy special.
          • He was a 2018 candidate for Lt Governor of Massachusetts earning 41% of the vote in the Democratic primary.
          • He is the founder of Humor for Humanity which raises spirits, funds and awareness for nonprofits and social causes through his work as a comedian, emcee, and auctioneer.
          • He is the host of The Jimmy Tingle Show podcast available at his website or wherever podcasts are available.

Thursday, May 9

In the afternoon, the Host Committee is planning several options. Please sign up at the registration desk for:

The Black Heritage Trail

This 1.6 mile, 90 minute tour is run by the National Park Service at no charge.
During the time between 1783, when Massachusetts outlawed slavery and the
end of the Civil War, Beacon Hill housed more than half of Boston’s African American
population. It was also the heart of the City's abolition movement and the Underground Railroad. The tour will stop at many of the houses, schools, churches, and meeting places from that era and includes historical commentary.

The Embrace

Please do not miss a visit to the amazing and controversial sculpture, a mere half-mile walk from the hotel. The Embrace Memorial is an important cultural symbol of equity and justice for Boston residents and all those who visit the city. https://www.embraceboston.org/

Labor History Tour

No NAA meeting would be complete without a labor history tour.

Bocce in the North End

We reserved public courts and have sets of bocce balls available. The North End bocce ball courts overlook Boston Harbor with a view of the USS Constitution. People can then choose to go back to the hotel for the evening reception and dine around or stay in the North End for an Italian dinner at a true neighborhood place.

Dine Around

There will be many options. The restaurant and host list will be sent to those who register for the conference with sign up instructions. Space may also be available to sign up at the last minute at the NAA registration desk.

Friday, May 10 After the business meeting, we encourage you to sign up on your own for a tour of Fenway Park at https://www.mlb.com/redsox/ballpark/tours. Finally, what trip to Boston would be complete without seeing a game at Fenway Park? John Stout and Margie Brogan have generously stepped up to organize the purchase of tickets. If you want to go but did not already purchase a ticket in advance, please check at the NAA registration desk as some people with tickets may not be using them. Or, contact the Red Sox box office.
